The Thomistic half truth is that the object of the will must be clearly discerned by the intellect before it can be chosen, the Franscian half truth is that the will to learn the object must itself already present before it can be discerned. As such, Charity and Hope must precede the discourse, for the will must be moved and made willing by charity to trust thst the teacher acts in good faith and so be made willing to hear, and the intellect must grasp first in hope that though the object or goal be not seen in the present, but in the course of discourse it would be made clear and understood.
