Now that I think about it, the rather common Christian slogan that God accepts us for who we are actually makes no sense. Why should God accept us *for* us to be who we are, worthless sinners whose end is doom and destruction? Surely God accepts us, not for who we are, but for who can be, for who we can become, sanctified children of God conformed to the image of his Son.

In fact, it is precisely because God refuses to accept us for who we are, refuses to accept us as doomed creatures destined for death, destruction and decay, whereby he has sent his Son to save us from who we are, and to be redeemed for what we can be.

This is the hope of the Christian Gospel, that God refuses to accept us for who we are, nor settle for us to wallow in our corruption, but has given us his Son that we might have the hope that we will not remain who we are but may be conformed to the example of the Son, and that at the General Resurrection, we shall no longer remain in our old body of sin, but shall at last be raised to glory in newness of life…
