Perhaps the concept of the narrative structure of the Bible is one of the worst things to have happened to biblical scholarship.

It’s like, we are unashamedly and explicitly being LARPish. The Bible consists of “stories”, which we “re-enact” in our lives. How can anyone possibly take such a faith seriously which sees it more as a drama class and side hobby, a mere literary or aesthetic enchantment over and on top of our boring lives?

It is here where I am firmly with the Neo-Orthodox Protestants in seeing the Scripture as primarily a witness to salvation history rather than a set of stories. To be sure, it does witness through narrative accounts (sometimes, not all parts of the Bible are narratives), but the narrative is not the thing in itself, the narrative points to the acts of God in salvation history, and it is in witnessing to these acts of God in our history and in the history of the world whereby the Scriptures are God’s Word to us.
